Nelson Lim bio

I have worked as a Technical Director on a variety of feature films, commercials and game cinematics. I enable storytellers to create engaging stories and help creative technologists(CTs) achieve a truly rich life. That can mean creating CG/visual effects for stories, developing innovative pipelines, helping creative technologists navigate their dream job, or find more creative, personal and financial fulfillment in their career.

My Journey…
I am originally from Singapore. As a kid I loved to tinker and draw. I would take clocks apart but never could put them back together. I would doodle all over my school notes. At 5 years old, I was addicted to fell in love with computer games. Fascinated, by how they were made, I wanted to be a game developer at about the age of 11, when I found out that people got paid to make games. Along the journey, I fell in love with coding and technology. I studied computer science and graphics at the National University of Singapore and landed a software engineering internship at Lucasfilm. I thought I wanted to develop games at LucasArts. At Lucasfilm, I found my other love, Visual Effects. I went on to develop software and created all sorts of digital mayhem and destruction for feature films at Industrial Light & Magic for many years. Throughout my career, I had lived and worked in Singapore and the United States before. But I eventually moved more permanently to the United States in 2015. I led the Technology and FX departments at an animation startup for a couple of years. I also veered back towards my roots of game development as the technology in real-time engines was really coming of age. These days, I am helping other creatives out on my website, continuing to work on cool CG projects and mentoring a new generation of CG artists and technologists at the University of Texas at Dallas. I was once told by a man who worked in several high-level roles in some of the biggest multinational companies in CG say this. He never dreamed he would be working in the roles and companies that he did. He just knew that he loved graphics and technology and he woke up everyday wanting to pursue them. That’s me. The journey takes many forms, but the pursuit of art, technology and creating value and meaning is what gets me excited to jump out of bed each morning. If you are into CG and VFX, you have a lot of choices in terms of who you read and where you get your materials from. I hope to earn your trust with the content I create.

The Website…
In 2020, I started nelsonlim.com to write about content that I am interested in — CG, VFX and Technology. I wanted to challenge myself and learn from others in the process. More importantly, I wanted to help people who are along the same journey and connect people together. Confused and worried about how to find your dream CG job? You know that a little coding is going to help your career immensely, but don’t know where to begin? Heard that Houdini is hard to learn, but you know it will benefit your career to pick it up? Should you learn, Blender? You want to do what you love, but you wonder if you can be financially secure in your career choice? I have asked these questions myself and I get it. These are real issues and there can be a lot of voices out there. Some of these issues aren’t even written or spoken of very much within CG. Diving into these topics, I hope to add value by writing about them and create materials with focused actionable steps that you can unpack and leverage upon in your own life. I strongly believe in the Pareto principle or the 80/20 rule. At least 80% of the results come from 20% of the most important actions or content. So I write about which 20% to focus your efforts on to achieve massive success. Don’t waste your time. I don’t believe in just producing tutorials or tools. Therefore, I write a lot about the psychology and processes of being more creative, earning more and optimizing your life for fulfillment.
Finally, I spend a significant amount of time creating my materials to ensure that they are truly remarkable content. They need to add value and solve real problems that my readers face. I also give away most of my content FREE, making sure they are better than paid content out there.

My goal is to enjoy a rich creative life and I want to share that with you. If this resonates with you, sign up for my insiders newsletter. It’s FREE. There I share all kinds of tips, tricks, pdfs, videos, tutorials, insights, scripts, tools and materials with my readers.
